Synopsis

Our flash-based yacht tracking system was originally developed for the Rolex Middle Sea Race (http://www.rolexmiddlesearace.com/). Over the three years that our system has been in operation we have greatly expanded the functionality and scope of this application. Our system manages near real-time satellite data to track all participants throughout the week-long race event. Visitors can view the information in various ways, including real-time and playback modes as well as additional information on the racing yachts.

1. Real-time data collection

Data is automatically collected from a remote, third party satellite tracking provider and processed for the mapping flash GUI. This happens at the fastest interval provided from the satellite trackers to ensure up-to-the-minute accurate data.

2. Advanced mapping GUI

Our data visualization GUI has an easy to use interface enabling users to zoom and pan over the race area to see detailed path information. The paths of the yachts can be traced in great detail such that no detail of the race is missed. Various other details about each participant are easily available as well as current real-time race stats.

3. Automatic data refreshing

Race data is refresh automatically to ensure the display shows the most accurate information available. The data delivery is specifically optimized for delivery over the internet to ensure smooth operation of the flash application.

4. Detailed data visualization

Individual data points, yacht paths and other details can be enabled for specific yachts or whole categories. This way the paths of specific competitors can be viewed and compared. Combined with the playback feature one can play out the race of specific boats at any point in time.

5. Fast-forward data playback

During and after the race the full data set can be played back in real-time, faster than real-time or even backwards. The race can be scrutinized at any point in time. Yacht positions can be compared easily by hiding all but the items of interest.
